After 12 months of waiting for Zhang Liyin’s comeback into the Asian entertainment industry, Chocolates (her unofficial fanclub name) were finally able to see her return into the spotlight. Four months after her return, her album sales were reported to be over 270,000 in sales, and her single, “I Will” reached music rankings in both China and Korea. As loyal fans of Liyin, we couldn’t be more proud. Liyin was finally receiving the attention she has long deserved.

However, during this summer, SM Entertainment announced a Pan-Asia tour for the SMTOWN family, including one stop specifically in Shanghai, China – Liyin's home country and her target audience for the past nine months. For the first stop in Korea, she was only able to sing two songs, "I Will" and "One More Try". As Korea is not her target market, we Chocolates agreed that this should be acceptable. But despite BoA forced to withdraw from the Shanghai concert due to an injury and thus freeing up open performance spots for other artists, you chose not to give any of the free slots for your Chinese soloist, who would be singing, at the time, to a Chinese audience. Instead, her two song performances remained the same, while artists who have never promoted in China before were given more than two song performances. Devastated at the lost opportunity for Liyin to shine in her home country, Chocolates realized that SM Entertainment had once again ignored their talent, Zhang Liyin, and ultimately, all her fans.

Out of all the current active talents in SM Entertainment right now, Zhang Liyin has taken the longest break between releases than any other artist, spanning 18-month break between her first “Timeless” single and “I Will”, her first Chinese album. TVXQ took nearly two years off from Korea to focus in Japan, but they were still able to perform and release singles and albums; Super Junior at most took nine months to focus on other side projects, but they too were allowed to perform and have regular activities; SNSD took less than a year to focus on producing their second album, but they were allowed to perform and appear regularly for fans; even The Grace’s break lasted at most 12 months between releases. Throughout her year-long break, Chocolates were only able to see her at TVXQ concerts, at most performing two songs and appearing once every few months.

The impression of being neglected seemed even more prominent when other artists who debuted after Liyin received more exposure than Liyin has since she debuted. They received commercial films, magazine photoshoots, product sponsorships, their own variety shows and even official names for their fanclubs. Now, two years after her original debut, Liyin has not experienced any of that.

We are writing to you, SM Entertainment, in hope that you will give what Zhang Liyin has been working for and what all Chocolates have been waiting for these past two years. We have slimmed down the number of suggestions offered by Chocolates and have summarized them in hope that you will take our suggestions and put them into action:


01. Promotion Outfits

a. A new outfit for each function in attendance.
b. Each outfit must not be used more than once; mix and match old outfits for minor events.
This is suggested because while Liyin’s juniors, SNSD, have been dressed in many different outfits throughout their year-long career, Liyin has not received that luxury. She has sung in the same outfits time and time again. Surely, the cost of supporting one lone female soloist must be less than supporting nine different girls.


02. Product Sponsorship, Magazines Appearances and Photoshoots

a. Product sponsorships especially in eye products and new clothes.
b. Photoshoots in fashion magazines such as: VOGUE China and Elle China
Again, other female SM talents have received the opportunities to appear in many reputable fashion magazines (e.g. Yeonhee Lee, THE GRACE, SNSD, BoA). In the two years of her debut, Liyin has never appeared in a magazine photoshoot with freely sponsored clothes. Instead, she was shown wearing company clothes. Even when she was still active in the Korean music industry, she had never been in any magazine photoshoots and had never been a sponsor of a fashion company’s products.


03. TV Show Appearances
a. China: A Date with Lu Yu (鲁豫有约)
b. Taiwan: 100% Entertainment (娛樂百分百), Zong Yi Da Ge Da (綜藝大哥大), Kangxi Laile (康熙來了)
c. A behind-the-scenes documentary to get to know her personally.
As with this suggestion as well, other SM artists have had the opportunity to host their own variety show as well as guest on many others (e.g. TVXQ, THE GRACE, Super Junior, SNSD, SHINee). Since Liyin is a solo artist and perhaps is not suitable to host a show by herself, she can certainly still be documented like many other female SM artists have (e.g. BoA, SNSD), and appear on variety shows. China’s A Date with Lu Yu is popular among general audiences; Taiwan is especially known internationally for the show called 100% Entertainment.


04. Releases and Tie-ins
a. An opportunity to star in her own music video.
b. Letting her have her own promotional time before releasing another artist’s album.
c. Tie-in her singles to commercial, movies or television dramas.
Since her debut, Chocolates have been relatively pleased with the music videos made for Liyin. They’ve been mostly big production projects and they’ve given Liyin a lot of attention, but her solo music video remains relatively unknown by netizens. Chocolates believe that it is about time people start to know her by face and not just by association with other SM artists. It is time that Liyin stands on her own. This also relates to how short individual promotion time Liyin had before another artist, Super Junior-M, debuted in China. We respect Super Junior-M as an artist, but if Liyin had more opportunity to promote her album, others could see that she truly is a solo artist, and she would not be criticized for using another artist’s fame to promote her own. With all this said, this can be solved by connecting her singles to popular commercials, movies or TV dramas.


05. Official Fanclub and Balloon Colour

Although most of Liyin’s fans do not reside in Korea, we understand that representing our loyalty for an artist means we need a colour which informs others of our association to our artist. Despite it being two years after her original debut, we were only recently given an official balloon colour – gold. Other SM artists who debuted later than Liyin were given official fanclub names and colours months after their original debut date. Thus, Chocolates are asking for equal respect. Confirm our fanclub name (Chocolate) and fanclub colour (gold), and update both on the official SM Entertainment website.

Throughout 2007, we Chocolates reminded ourselves that we must remain patient for Liyin. We told ourselves, to each other, to casual supporters, that Liyin will soon return with her first album, creating the next Hallyu wave that SM Entertainment has promised us for so long, stepping up deservedly into the nickname, “Chinese BoA” that was first given by you, SM Entertainment. Instead, her album was pushed back more than twice: from September to November, from November to January, from January to March.

In 2008, though we were slightly disappointed by the lack of promotion Liyin received, we forgave SM Entertainment, knowing she has improved, seeing she is happier in her home country, believing that her time will come for her to shine. This moment has yet to arrive, even though the opportunity presented itself at the SMTOWN LIVE ’08 in Shanghai. Instead, it was dismissed carelessly, and we were once again reminded of the impatience we had to endure throughout those 12 months.

Chocolates are generally very open-minded and accepting. We have never caused any trouble for any other fanclubs nor for any other artists. We support all artists who debuted before Zhang Liyin and those who debuted after. But now, Chocolates have had enough of this bullying. Zhang Liyin deserves better treatment and we are speaking up so we can be heard.

昨天和班长带队一行几人去「钱柜」好好唱了一下午的歌
那叫一个爽,我嗓子禁闭了一个月.昨天终于释放了
想到后面四年我都要来往于KTV之间
索性办了一张VIP会员卡
方便俺今后出门无聊时的"娱乐事业"

于是,我吼我唱..原来"疏通"了嗓子
是那么舒服啊...
